Methods for obtaining sets of low molecular weight polymers resulting from variables constituent monomers, said assemblies being systematically different with respect to two or more variables. One can sort the sets in order to obtain elements (paralogs) capable of specifically binding a target moiety. Such paralogs are useful in chromatographic separations and purifications of desired analytes, and in binding assays such as immunoassays, employing said analytes, as well as all purposes requiring said specific binding. The invention also provides kits for making such determinations, and synthesizing processes of sets of paralogs candidates, and the use of these sets to produce analyte profiles and cross-reactive matrices.
