Presents a study on continuum concept, ordination methods, and niche memory in ecology. Contrast of the concept of vegetation as a continuum with a changing species composition to the community-unit theory; Acceptance of the continuum concept by ecologists despite remaining questions on its adequacy; Development of ordination techniques prompted by the need for quantitative procedures for examining vegetation as a continuum.
