Use of legume seeds by bruchid and anthribid beetles (Coleoptera) in a mosaic forest-savanna zone (Lamto: Ivory Coast)
摘要:
Average weight of seeds vary in a range of 1 to 10 000. Two-thirds of these seeds contain alkaloids. Thirty-two species of bruchids were recognized, from which 22 are monophagous. A great majority of legumes is not attacked by bruchids even in genera with numerous species: Dalbergia, Eriosema, Tephrosia, Vigna. Some legumes are attacked by three (Dichrostachys cinerea) even four species of bruchids (Cathormion altissimum). The authors found 34 species of bruchids for 130 indigenous species of legumes and only seven on the 45 introduced species. When a bruchid exploits several species of legumes, these are highly related taxa. In the genus Bruchidius, size of adults is influenced by the size of the seed. The dry weight of an adult represents 2-4% of the seed attacked, except if the larvae eats several small seeds in the pods. The majority of the species have at least two consecutive generations a year. Infestation rates are low in average (<10% of seed production) except for few Mimosoideae, eg Albizia ferruginea and A. zygia. Among the analyzed secondary compounds only lectins could eventually protect the seed against the family of bruchids. One Anthribidae (Araecerus coffeae) is the most polyphagous seed-eater of the community with 18 host-plants. -from English summary
