The fine-scale tectonic, volcanic, and hydrothermal processes of mid-ocean ridges are reviewed, including the three-dimensional behaviour of spreading centres. Evidence from seismic, petrological, and ophiolite field studies underlines the importance of an axial magma chamber but leaves several key questions unanswered. What is the stratigraphic relationship of the magma chamber to the oceanic crust and upper mantle? At what spreading rate does the chamber cease to be steady-state? What is the temporal behaviour of high-T springs of the 'black smoker' variety? -R.A.H.
