Effects of smoking on fluphenazine clearance in psychiatric inpatients

Collected demographic, medical history, and laboratory data on 17 psychiatric patients who smoked more than 1 pack of cigarettes per day and 23 nonsmoking psychiatric inpatients. Ss were maintained on either oral fluphenazine (FPZ) HCl or FPZ decanoate. Analyses showed that smokers' FPZ clearance was significantly greater than nonsmokers' clearance. It is concluded that clinicians should carefully monitor patients for adverse or therapeutic effects if patients start or stop smoking.
