Treatment of a number of acyloins and acyloin acetates with 1,3-propanedithiol, hydrogen chloride and zinc chloride in benzene provided in each case a simple mercaptal, the hydroxyl or acetoxyl groups having been replaced with hydrogen. Ketones subsequently were obtained by ordinary hydrolytic methods.
