Esterification Reaction over Sulfonic Acid Functionalized Mesoporous Benzene-Silica with Crystal-Like Pore Walls

Recently, we reported the synthesis of hybrid mesoporous benzene-silica exhibited novel crystal-like periodic structures in the pore walls from 100% of phenylene bridged organosilane precursor [(EtO)_3Si-C_6H_4-Si(OEt)_3: BTEB] in the presence of surfactant (Fig.1). In subsequent report, we described the synthesis of sulfonic acid-functionalized mesoporous benzene-silica by co-condensation of BTEB and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane [MPTMS: (MeO)_3Si-C_3H_6-SH] followed by post-synthesis oxidation (Fig.2). The bifunctional mesoporous material has sulfonic groups attached on the silica layers of the crystal-like periodic pore walls, and is expected to exhibit unique catalysis because the periodic pore surface will be of great advantages for the enhanced selectivity and activity. Here, we report the first catalytic application of the sulfonic acid functionalized mesoporous benzene-silica in esterification of acetic acid with ethanol.
