The hypoglycemic effects of the ethanolic leaf extract of Phyllanthus acidus (PA) was investigated in normal and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. P. acidus leaf extract on a dose at 250 mg/kg was administrated orally and daily to normal and diabetic rats for eight weeks. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), serum insulin, HbA1c and morphological of Islet of Langerhans were determined. The results showed that FBG in diabetic rats treated with PAE 250 mg/kg was significantly less than those in diabetic controls and diabetic rats treated with glibenclammide (p< 0.05). HbA1c in normal rats were different from the diabetic rats, but it is lower than recommended. However, serum insulin in diabetic rats treated with PAE (250 mg/kg) was significantly higher than those of diabetic controls, diabetic rats treated with glibenclamide. These finding indicate that Phyllanthus acidus leaf extract exert hypoglycemic activity in diabetic rats by stimulating insulin secretion.
