PURPOSE: To obtain a ruthenium-iodo-optically active phosphine complex having high catalytic activity and useful for catalysts, etc., for producing an optically active 4-methyl-2-oxetanone which is an intermediate for polymers, medicines, liquid crystal, etc., by reacting a specific ruthenium-optically active phosphine complex with an inorganic iodide. ;CONSTITUTION: A ruthenium-optically active phosphine complex expressed by formula I [Et is ethyl; CBP is formula II (R<Sup>1</Sup> is aryl or a 3-8C cycloalkyl) or formula III (R<Sup>2</Sup> is aryl or a 3-8C cycloalkyl; R<Sup>3</Sup> is methyl or methoxy; R<Sup>4</Sup> is H, methyl, methoxy or a di-lower-alkyl-substituted amino; R<Sup>3</Sup> and R<Sup>4</Sup> form tetrahydronaphthyl together with adjacent phenyl group)] is reacted with an inorganic iodide (e.g. potassium iodide) to provide the objective complex having a high catalytic activity and capable of providing an optically active 4-methyl-2- oxetanone which is a polymer raw material, a raw materials for synthesizing medicines or an intermediate for liquid crystal materials, etc., as a catalyst for asymmetric synthesis providing a product having high optical purity.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
