PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liq. crystal aligning agent which can produce a liq. crystal display element exhibiting a high voltage retention and a low residual d.c. voltage by incorporating a polyamic acid and/or its imidized polymer, an epoxy compd., and a curative for the epoxy compd. into the same. ;SOLUTION: This liq. crystal aligning agent is obtd. by incorporating, into the same, 100 pts.wt. at least either a polyamic acid obtd. by the ring-opening addition reaction of a tetracarboxylic dianhydride and a diamine compd. or a polymer having an imide structure and formed by the cyclization by dehydration of a polyamic acid, 10-90 pts.wt. epoxy compd. having at least two glycidyl groups, and an epoxy curative (e.g. a diamine compd., an acid anhydride, a boron complex, an imidazole compd., a hydrazide compd., or dicyandiamide) in an amt. of 0.01-1 mol based on 1 mol of the epoxy group in the epoxy compd.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
