The mandrel (3) is curved and comprises a solid triangular cross-section; composite material is applied to external surfaces of the curved mandrel (3) and is cured to produce the flange which comprises a curved hollow member with a triangular cross-section. The mandrel (3) comprises at least two parts which can be dismantled for removal from the formed flange; these parts can be segments (3A, 3B) with mitred surfaces, one on top of the other optionally with end plates. Alternatively, the parts can be tessellating sections joined together. As a further option, the mandrel can be of soluble material. The formed flange is mounted on a pipe to form a structure which can be joined with another like structure or a further structural element, e.g. in aircraft construction.
