Describes a [3+2] phosphine-catalyzed cycloaddition approach to cyclopentenes from electron-deficient olefins and simple 2,3-butadienoates or 2-butynoates as the three-carbon moiety. Proposed reaction mechanism; Potential use of the synthetic method for the preparation of cyclopentanoid natural products.
