Purpose : While practitioners recommend "preservative free" hydrogen peroxide (HP) solutions to address contact lens (CL) discomfort with CL multi-purpose solutions1, irritation is the major reason HP users stop use.2 A new multi-purpose solution (MPS) including three moisturizers, the electrolyte potassium, and an osmoprotectant/antioxidant was developed to improve comfort. This in-home use test evaluated the performance of this new MPS (Biotrue Hydration Plus MPS) among soft CL wearers who habitually use Clear Care branded HP solutions. Methods : Soft CL users were recruited online via consumer panel providers. Eligible participants had to be aged ≥ 18 years, a habitual user of soft CLs, to have had an eye exam within the last 2 years, to have knowledge of disinfectant solution brand used, and to have never had an allergic reaction to MPS.Participants who used Clear Care or Clear Care Plus MPS most often were asked to use the new MPS for 7 days, with a new pair of CLs, before completing an online survey (using a 7-pt Likert scale). At least 60% of the online survey results were validated via follow-up phone calls.A two-sided exact binomial test was performed to test whether agreement was indicated for more than 50% of responses for the performance attributes. Results : The habitual Clear Care Solution user sample included 199 participants (mean age of 42.6±11.6 years; 64.8% females). All participants used the new MPS for at least 5 days.96.5% of participants agreed the new MPS was gentle on their eyes, and over 87% of participants agreed that it had positively impacted the comfort of their CLs. Participants' perceptions of performance attributes are in Table 1. Agreement responses were significantly greater than 50% for all performance attributes (p<0.5). Overall satisfaction with the new MPS was 96.0%. Conclusions : Clear Care HP users reported a positive experience in terms of comfort, cleanliness, hydration, and overall satisfaction with Biotrue Hydration Plus MPS. The results demonstrate that Biotrue Hydration Plus MPS is an excellent alternative to peroxide solutions for comfort and gentleness on eyes.
