Evaluation and Control of Alternaria tenuissima Causing Leaf Spots in Blue Honeysuckle in China

Blue honeysuckle(Lonicera caerulea L.) is emerging as a popular edible fruit and folk medicine.Honeysuckle has the effects of clearing heat,detoxifying,anti-inflammatory,and reducing swelling,and has great medicinal value.Considering the small planting area of blue honeysuckle,the diseases affecting blue honeysuckle have not attracted sufficient attention of plant pathologists.However,from June to August 2021,a serious leaf-spot causing disease affected the yield and quality of blue honeysuckle was in Harbin,Heilongjiang Province,China,the species and characteristics of the pathogens responsible for the disease are unknown.Infected leaves had small brown and irregular lesions that enlarged as irregular spots along leaf margins;in severe cases,infected leaves gradually wilted and fell off the plant.In this study,30 fungal isolates,identified as Alteruaria tenuissima based on morphological and molecular characteristics and phylogenetic analyses,were obtained from infected blue honeysuckle leaves.Pathogenicity tests of the isolates revealed that all isolates were highly pathogenic to blue honeysuckle.2455-815 X All blue honeysuckle cultivars were found to be susceptible to A.tenuissima.In addition,A.tenuissima isolates infected elder(Sambucus williamsii Hance.),Dahurian rose fruit(Rosa davurica Pall.),sea-buckthorn(Hippophae rhamuoides linn.),rowan [Sorbus pohuashanensis(Hance) Hedl.],hawthorn(Crataegus pinnatifida Bge.),bird cherry(Padus avium Miller.),and sorb(Pyrus ussurieusis maxim.),but not European cranberry bush(Viburnum opulus Linn.) and nanking cherry(Cerasus tomentosa Thunb.).A.tenuissima isolate was the most sensitive to prochloraz,with EC50 values of 0.060 4 μg/ml and efficacy ranging between 92.1 and 92.5% at 400 μg/mL.Therefore,the use of resistant varieties,intercropping host and non-host plants,and chemicals can be considered to control the disease causing leaf spots in blue honeysuckle.Therefore,the above methods can effectively prevent the occurrence of A.tenuissima fungal disease in blue honeysuckle,providing a method for field prevention and control.
