Plant material, and extracts thereof, of the neem tree (Azadiracta indica A. Juss., Meliaceae) are receiving world-wide attention as possible insect control agents. Although Meliaceae plants are widely distributed, only a few have been investigated from an insect control viewpoint, and no direct activity comparisons with neem have been published. Preliminary assays using fall armyworm [Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)], striped cucumber beetle [Acalymma vittatum (F.)], and brine shrimp (Artemia salina Leach.) indicated that a number of extracts were as potent as, or more potent than, neem extract at the rather high concentrations tested. There-fore, a number of these seed extracts were compared with neem seed extracts at a series of concentrations in artificial diet by using fall armyworm larvae.
