Sulphonylhydrazones have been prepared from the four decalones and decomposed under conditions favouring the pyrolysis of the intermediate diazodecalins (a) as such and (b) after initial C-protonation. Mixtures of octalins were formed exclusively in each case. Quantitative analysis indicated that in the uncatalysed decomposition of the diazo-compounds the migration of an adjacent proton took place from a position antiparallel to that of the expelled nitrogen molecule. This implies that free carbenes are not intermediates in these reactions.
