Chiral Supramolecular Assemblies from Porphyrins

Chiral supramolecular assemblies(CSS) have been attracting a wide research focuses including asymmetric catalysis, chiral sensing, biomimetics, optics and electronic materials and circularly polarized luminescence(CPL).~1 Porphyrin is one of the important building blocks in self-assembly. We co-self-assembly of a series of achiral porphyrins with chiral molecules to construct the CSS and realized some new functions. Using a chiral amphiphilic histidine, we assembled the porphyrin with four carboxylic acids into hierarchical chiral nano-to microstructures such as chiral nanohelices and microflowers. The supramolecular chirality of these structures was achieved by the chirality transfer, which follow the molecular chirality of the histidine derivative. More interestingly, the microflower structures formed a superhydrophobic and chiral surface, which showed enantioselectivity to some amino acids via contact angle measurement.~2 An achiral TPPS was found to form helical nanorods with enantiomeric diaminocyclohexane(DAC). The addition of Ag(I) ion can tune the self-assembled nanostructures. By tuning the molecular ratio of TPPS to DAC, the supramolecular chirality of TPPS/DAC could be amplify or inversed. Using supramolecular chirality amplification, an enantioselective system was constructed. We have also investigated the co-assembly of metalloporphyrin with the chiral gelators. We have found that a chiral gelators and hemin formed right-and left-handed helical ribbons. Such helical ribbons were used as artificial enzymes to catalyse the oxidation reaction of 3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine(L-DOPA). The catalytic activity of hemin in supramolecular gels can be effectively enhanced and an enantioselective activity was also revealed.~3 When achiral Pd(II) octaethylporphyrin was used as an sensitizer for an anthrancene assemblies, upconverted circularly polarized luminescence(CPL) could be observed through a triplet–triplet annihilation photon upconversion(TTA-UC), while downconverted CPL could be obtained from chirality-transfer induced emission of the achiral Pd(II) octaethylporphyrin sensitizer.~4
