The article explores the current methods and future possibilities for the synthesis of transportation fuels from biomass. Topics discussed include: biomass chemistry and growth rates; biomass gasification; syn-gas utilization; bio-oil production; upgrading of bio-oil; biomass monomer production; conversion of sugar into fuels; the conversion of nonsugar monomers derived from lignocellulose; and triglyceride conversion.
