ON THE NONLINEAR EVOLUTION OF INSTABILITY MODES IN UNSTEADY SHEAR LAYERS: THE STOKES LAYER AS A PARADIGM
摘要:
The Stokes layer, generated by an oscillating flat plate in an infinite fluid, is used as a paradigm for the evolution of instability waves in unsteady shear layers. Specializing on two-dimensional waves, their temporal nonlinear evolution is studied via critical-layer theory resulting in an amplitude equation of Hickernell's integro-differential type. Depending on the wave number range, the solution of the amplitude equation either displays a finite-time singularity or reaches an equilibrium state. The singularity is often related to the bursts observed in the laminar-turbulent transition process.
