The meaning-familiarity relationship.

A theoretical-experimental analysis of the attribute of familiarity in verbal stimulus material is presented. Familiarity is defined as some increasing function of the frequency of occurrence of a given stimulus, and a quantitative scale of familiarity is established. The relationship between familiarity and meaning is discussed, and the hypothesis proposed that the two are positively related; the exact functional relationship is suggested. 19 references.
