High Efficiency and Excellent Stability of Fluorous Amphiphilic Heteroleptic Ru-based Complexes for Dye-sensitized Solar Cell

A new series of amphiphilic heteroleptic ruthenium(II) sensitizers with a fluorousbis-ponytailed bipyridine ancillary ligand, Ru(H2dcbpy)(4,4'-bis(RfCH2OCH2)-2,2'-bpy)(NCS)2][where Rf = HCF2 (NL2), CF3 (NL3), HCF2CF2 (NL4), C2F5 (NL5), C3F7 (NL7) andHCF2CF2CF2CF2 (NL8)][figure1], have been synthesized and fully characterized by UV/Vis,visible emission, NMR, MS-FAB and cyclic voltammetric studies. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs)based on these dyes exhibit efficiencies either better than or comparable with that of the standard cellbased on N719. The conversion efficiency of most of NL-based DSSC is ~10% higher than that ofZ907 with a non-fluorous bis-ponytailed bipyridine ancillary ligand. Firstly, the fluorous chains fromthese fluorous dyes were found to form the hydrophobic layers to prevent the excited electrons fromrecombining with the electrolyte. Secondly, the adsorbed fluorous dyes change the density of state ofTiO2 will be addressed. In summary, these NL dyes show the better light soaking strength andthermal stability than N719 or Z907.
