[Also in Group XV] A paper-like sheet material which disintegrates in water without agitation is made from a loose fibre fleece by impregnating it with a water-soluble film-forming substance, drying it to adhere the fibres together, rewetting it and smoothing by calendering. The fleece consists of cardable natural or synthetic fibres or mixtures of both, e.g. cotton, linen, hemp, ramie, wool, cellulose acetate staple, polyvinyl alcohol fibres, nylon, Perlon (Registered Trade Mark) or Trevira (Registered Trade Mark). The filmforming substance is one adapted to adhere to the fibres and form a film-like coating on them and so act as a binder, examples are methylcellulose, cellulose glycolates, polyacrylic acids, water-soluble polyacrylates, polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyoarboxylic acids, water-soluble ureaformaldehyde condensation products, dextrins, sugars, alkali, ammonium and triethanolamine alginates, corragheen moss solutions, alkali caseinates and waterglass. Fillers, emollients or hygroscopic substances and dyes may be added to the film-forming substance. The impregnation may be carried out by placing the fleece between two wire screens and immersing the screens and fleece in an aqueous mixture of film-forming substance and other ingredients. After the impregnation, the upper screen is removed, and the wet fleece dried on the lower screen.
