Thome AFFILIATION: R.J. Reynold's Tobacco Company, Research Department, Winston-Sal;em, NC 271'02 The subject of the second TCRC Symposium in 1975 was new techniques for smoke chemistry and physics. Recent improvements in analytieal technology that have been applied to the study of tobacco products since the earlier symposium are reviewed. Specifie topics covered include gas and liquid chromatography, gas chromatography/mass spec- trometry, gas chromatography/infrared spectrometry, mass spectrometry, advances in the determination of FTC "tar" and nicotine, and analysis of carbon monoxide. Tobacco chemists have become leaders in the deveLopment and application of all forms of chroma- tography. In recent years, high resolution glass capillary gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography have become generally available as analytical tool~s. Examples of successful~ application of these techniques to leaf and smoke chemistry are reviewed. EquaLly, iimportant to tobacco chemists are innovations in spectrometric techniques useful for either identification or quantification including GC/:SS, GC/TR, and mass spectroscopy. Newer soft ionization methods in mass spectro- scopy such as field desorption have become particularly useful in the identification of nonvolatile and/or thermally labile compounds. Determination of FTC "tar" and: nico- tine is important to tobacco chemists. Advances in measurement of these have centered on inproveiimethods of data acquisition and'proeessing and in the automation of associated analyses. REVIEW: This paper was not assigned'for review.
