Theefectofinterferonincombinationwithribavirinontheplusandminusstrandsofhe-patitisCvirus(HCV)RNAinpatientswithchronichepatitisC(CHC)wasstudiedbymeansofnestedRT-PCR.Theresultsshowedthatinthosewhorespondtothecombinationofantiviraltherapy,theirincreasedserumALTlevelsdecreasedtonormalrange,butmorethanhalf(55.56%)ofthesepa-tientsrelapsed24weeksaftercessationoftheantiviraltherapy.ThepositiverateoftheplusstrandHCVRNAinserum(92.31%)decreasedsignificantlyto38.46%(P0.005)andthatoftheminusstrandsHCVRNAinperipheralbloodmononuclearcels(PBMC,76.92%)to38.46%(P0.05)attheendofthetreatment,butlittleefectontheplusstrandHCVRNAinPBMCinthesepatientswasfound.RelapseoccurredinpatientswhoseplusandminusstrandsofHCVRNAinPBMCremainedpos-itiveduringtreatment.ThesedataindicatedthatabsenceofHCVRNAinserumdonotmeancompleteclearanceofHCVandcannotpredictasustainedtherapeuticresponse.Forevaluatingtheantiviralef-fectandprognosisitisessentialtomeasuretheplusandminusstrandsofHCVRNAinserumandPBMCsimultaneously.Theresultsofthecombinedantivitaltherapyweresimilartothatofsingleinter-ferontreatment;itseemsthatriba-virindonotenhancetheantiviralefectofinterferon.
