The platelet-derived growth factor

Most diploid cell strains are unable to multiply in cell culture unless a minimal amount of whole blood serum is added to the culture medium. This requirement for serum or its derivatives for growth in culture was recognized quite early. Alexis Carrel (1912) noted that a serum-saturated plasma clot could serve as a source of nutrients and also stimulated the growth of embryonic cells in culture. Since those early observations a number of laboratories have examined the role of serum in the culture medium in relation to cell attachment, proliferation and viability.
