The title of the book is a tribute, perhaps inadvertent, perhaps intended,to Edmund L. Dubois (1923-1985), for it really is hislupus. Systemic lupus erythematosus was not mentioned in early rheumatologytexts, and even as late as 1948 was absent or at best squeezed into a fewpages.1 Dermatologists had known of itsskin manifestations since von Hebra's description in the mid-19th century,which was further enhanced by his son-in-law and student, Moriz Kaposi (bornKohn, but he changed his name while at the University of Vienna to avoid confusionwith another Moriz Kohn in his class), and Cazenave and Osler also advancedthe concept.
