Organo clay assemblies for triphase catalysis

Triphase catalyst systems for organic nucleophilic displacement reactions consist of a dispersed solid phase and two immiscible liquid phases that contain the electrophilic and nucleophilic reagents. Although triphase catalysis greatly simplifies the recovery of the catalyst and provides opportunities for selective chemical conversions based on substrate size or polarity, the technique is not without limitations. The authors report here a promising new family of triphase catalytic materials based on alkylammonium exchange forms of smectite clays. These intercalation compounds are efficient, stable, and recyclable catalysts for a variety of organic chemical conversions.
