High-performance liquid chromatographic determination of electrically neutral carbohydrates was carried out with conductometric detection. Although these compounds are not detected directly by a conductivity detector because of their low dissociation, most of their borate complexes are strong enough acids to be detected with a conductivity detector. Therefore, use of a boric acid solution as an eluent permitted these compounds to be determined with conductometric detection. Moreover, this method can be applied to simultaneous determination of carbohydrates with organic acids. However, only a limited number of organic acids can be measured together with carbohydrates because of the limitation of using a low-acidity eluent. The detection limits for carbohydrates typically ranged in 1 × 10 -5 M levels, and this method can be used for determining carbohydrates in food samples.
