Parkin, the ubiquitin ligase that is mutated in Parkinson's disease, regulates the clearance of damaged mitochondria via selective autophagy (mitophagy). Here, Carroll etal. show that Parkin activation in response to mitochondrial impairment can also result in the elimination of cells containing depolarized mitochondria via apoptosis.
