Circular dichroism of nucleoside derivatives. V. Cytosine derivatives.

Circular dichroism data are reported for 12 cytosine nucleoside derivatives. Four CD bands are found in many of the nucleosides examined near 270, 247, 220, and 195 mμ. The CD spectra of a number of cytidine analogs show quite remarkable similarities to the CD spectra of similar type uridine analogs in both the positions and the signs and ellipticities of the Cotton effects. Solvent and structural effects on conformation of both the uridine and cytidine analogs are considered and a diagram is proposed that should be useful in determining the conformation of certain uridine and cytidine derivatives.
