Raman spectra of the aluminum bromide addition compounds in methyl bromide and in ethyl bromide

The Raman spectrum of aluminum bromide in cyclohexane was obtained to establish the dimer, Al 2Br 6, frequencies in an inert solvent. The spectra of solutions of aluminum bromide in methyl bromide and ethyl bromide were determined and the frequencies assigned to the addition compounds MeBr:AlBr 3 and EtBr:AlBr 3. The carbon-bromine frequency is lower in a complex than in the parent alkyl halide, the extent of lowering being greatest for the ethyl bromide complex. The results support the postulated mechanism of the Friedel-Crafts reactions in which these compounds participate as intermediates.
