The use of hydroxyalkyl galactomannan gums in formation-fracturing fluids to reduce friction pressure and to increase permeability to fluids of subsurface formations is proposed. It has been discovered that the use of hydroxyalkyl galactommanan gums in the fracturing fluid, in place of the unmodified galactomannan gums, retains the fluid friction-reducing properties of the unmodified gum but unexpectedly is much less damaging to formation permeability.
