Protecting workers from ultraviolet radiation in sunlight
摘要:
Exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun is an occupational hazard for outdoor workers. In 1998, a survey of organisations and businesses assessed workplace provisions for outdoor workers' sun protection. Forty-four out of 69 large organisations in Victoria from a range of industry types participated. Reports from head office and worksite managers and supervisors were sought. Comparison with an earlier survey in 1996 suggests organisations have increased their efforts to support workers' sun protection. In 1998, 40% of organisations had a sun protection policy in place and a further 18% were developing a policy. Use of personal protective equipment was the most commonly used control strategy. Changes to work schedules or training were less commonly provided. Policy compliance problems included workers' resistance to protective clothing in hot conditions and risk awareness issues. The data suggest a number of areas for SunSmart to work with organisations to minimise the occupational risk of skin cancer.
