Syntheses and structures of molecular copper and silver polyselenide complexes [M4(Se4)x(Se5)3inx]2

The first copper and silver polyselenide complexes, (Ph 4P) 2[Cu 4(Se 4) 2.4(Se 5) 0.6] ( 1) and (Ph 4P) 2[Ag 4(Se 4) 2.1(Se 5) 0.9] ( 2) are formed by reaction of Se, Na, CuCl 2 or AgNO 3, and Ph 4PBr in DMF. Crystal structure determinations reveal molecular clusters, with M 4 tetrahedra edge-bridged as M 4(Se x) 3 by the terminal Se atoms of three chelating polyselenide ligands. The coordination at each M atom is approximately trigonal planar. Some of the polyselenide ligands are disordered in chain length and in conformation of the metallapolyselenane rings.
