Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering at the Oxygen K Resonance of NiO: Nonlocal Charge Transfer and Double-Singlet Excitations

Wereport high-resolution polarization-dependent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at theO resonance of NiO showing a rich excitation spectrum.We perform multisite NiOcluster model calculations, revealing that solidstate effects are substantial. We identify a nonlocal charge transferexcitation at 4–5eV and double-singlet creation at 1.75eV, both exhibitingsignificant scattering geometry dependence. Apart from an intense band oflocal charge transfer excitations (above 5eV) also excitations at1eV are observed. Finally, we point out that O RIXS of correlated metal oxides allows a quantitative and consistentdetermination of the charge transfer energy and the Hundcoupling energy .
