The reaction of cycloctanone with diazomethane has been reinvestigated, and the results indicate that no transannular products are formed. Methylenecycloctane oxide has been solvolyzed with formic acid and the only components isolated from this reaction were cycloctanecarboxaldehyde, 1-cycloctene-1-methanol, 1-hydroxycycloctane-1-methanol, 2-cyclooctyl-1,3-dioxaspiro[4.7]dodecane, 2-methylenecycloctanol, 1-cycloctene-1-carboxaldehyde, and an unsaturated alcohol of unknown structure. None of the identified products result from transannular reactions.
