Four-carbon model compounds for the reactions of sugars in water at high temperature

Reactions of glycerol, 2-propanol, 1,4-butanediol, tetrahydrofuran, glyceraldehyde, pyruvaldehyde and dihydroxyacetone with water at 250°C, with and without H2SO4, were studied as probable stages in the formation of furaldehydes from pentoses and hexoses, notably furfural from xylose and HMF from fructose or glucose.
