A method of preventing and/or reducing deposition of denatured proteins on a contact lens while worn on the eye involves dispensing in the eye an ophthalmically compatible composition including tromethamine in an amount effective to prevent or reduce protein denaturation. The compositions preferably include a demulcent, and may include conventional eye drop components such as a preservative, a buffering agent, a chelating agent, an osmolality adjusting agent, and/or a surfactant.
