Transfer hydrogenation and transfer hydrogenolysis. VI. Mechanism of hydrogen transfer from indoline to cycloheptene catalyzed by chlorotris(triphenylphosphine)rhodium(I)

The mechanism of hydrogen transfer from indoline to cycloheptene in toluene catalyzed by RhCl(PPh 3) 3 has been studied. The rate data of the reaction can be accommodated by the rate expression of the form, rate = a[D][C] 0/(b + [L]) where [C] 0, [D], and [L] are the concentration of the catalyst, indoline, and triphenylphosphine, respectively. The rate-determining step of the reaction is inferred to be the dehydrogenation of indoline, that is, the hydrogen transfer from the amine to a Rh(I) complex to form a hydride complex by oxidative addition.
