Vortex Multiplication in Applied Flow: the Precursor to Superfluid Turbulence

In rotating superfluid 3He-B at temperatures below 0.6 Tc a curved vortex is observed to be unstable towards the generation of new vortices. At low applied flow velocity this leads to a prolonged period of slow increase in the number of vortices at constant rate, until the vortex density is sufficient for turbulence to switch on. Comparing measurements to numerical calculations, we infer that the process is caused by the growth of Kelvin waves on an isolated vortex loop which has connected to the outer sample boundary. The mutual friction parameter controlling the instability is identified.
