A method for providing antimicrobial or antiviral preservation to a liquid-containing composition is disclosed. The method comprises dissolving or dispersing an antimicrobial or antiviral amount of a compound having a molecular weight of about 200 to about 800 Da that is (i) a hydrocarbyl aminohydrocarbonate, (ii) an aminohydrocarbyl hydrocarbonate, (iii) a mixture of (i) and (ii) in that liquid-containing composition. A method of sanitizing a surface is also contemplated that comprises applying a composition prepared by the above method to contact a surface to be sanitized and maintaining that contact for a time sufficient to sanitize the same.
