Recognition memory was investigated with a concomitant rating of the S's confidence in his judgment. The probability of making a correct response as a function of the criterion adopted by the S is defined as the Operating Characteristic. One and 2 learning trials as well as 5-and 7-point rating scales are used. The results indicate that operating characteristics are linear although large intragroup differences exist.
