Secondary Instability Of Boundary Layers

An account is given of the past decade's progress in the characterization of three-dimensional aspect of transition in boundary layers. The initial response of the boundary layer to disturbances is governed by linear equations, and can be studied for isolated spectral components. Attention is presently restricted to the simplest, best-understood case of two-dimensional boundary layers along essentially flat surfaces; Tollmien-Schlichting waves, computer simulations, parametric instabilities, Floquet analysis, the secondary instability's subharmonic growth, Goertler vortices, and the threshold conditions for self-sustained growth, are all treated.
