The present invention relates to a process for extracting astaxanthin pigment from the yeast cells of comprising the steps of i) cultivating the yeast, ii) treating yeast culture suspension with microwave to destroy the cell walls and microbodies, iii) drying it or extracting astaxanthin pigment using the solvent selected from the group consisting of ethanol, methanol, acetone and mixture of them. Further, the present invention also relates to the astaxanthin extracted by above method.
