Condensation of tert- butyl α-lithioisobutyrate with acid chlorides. A synthesis for β-keto acids and ketones

The acylation of tert- butyl α-lithioisobutyrate with benzoyl chlorides gives the corresponding β-keto esters in good yield, and subsequent treatment of these esters with trifluoroacetic acid either at room temperature or at reflux affords β-keto acids or isobutyrophenones, respectively.
