Critical Layers in Shear Flows
摘要:
The nonlinear aspects of the critical-layer theory are examined. The formulation and stability of parallel shear flows are studied. The almost-inviscid theory and the occurrence of nonlinearity and viscosity in the critical layer are described. The applications of the nonlinear critical layer theory to geophysical fluid dynamics are discussed; the study by Kelly and Maslowe (1970) on the small-Richardson number of stratified shear flows, the wave-mean-flow interaction, and the free modes utilized in the spectral method which examines critical-layer absorption at moderate Reynolds numbers are analyzed. The relationship between time-dependence, nonlinearity, and dissipative effects in the critical layers is investigated.
