Design of road foundations
摘要:
This thesis investigates the mechanical properties of granular materials and examines various ways of both measuring and modelling such properties. The effects of varying particle gradation, degree of compaction, maximum particle size, moisture content and mineral type upon the stress strain behaviour of various limestones, granite, granitic sand, sandstone, crushed concrete and steel slag are investigated using a repeated load triaxial apparatus and the hollow cylinder apparatus. Models are developed which predict the stress-strain behaviour of dry granular material under any combination of applied stresses. This includes repeatable elastic behaviour and the development of irrecoverable plastic strain. A computer program (GRANMAT) has been written, which makes use of the stress strain equations developed, to analyse a road pavement structure consisting of thin bituminous surfacing, and granular base and subgrade. The reliability of this program is assessed and areas of necessary improvement indicated. The in situ testing of a number of road sites is also described and the results analysed. Suggestions for improving the design of granular road foundations are made.
