The structure of poly(diallyldimethyl‐ammonium) chloride by 13C‐NMR spectroscopy

The structures resulting from radical-induced cyclopolymerization of difunctional monomers have been the subject of much discussion. A brief review of works on the subject is followed by a description of an experimental program in which the **1**3C-NMR spectrum of poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride, a polymer of considerable commercial interest, as well as the spectra of the model compounds 1,1,3,4-tetramethylpyrrolidinium iodide and 1,1,3,5-tetrametnylpiperidinium iodide, which provide helpful interpretive insight, were obtained and analyzed. The spectra show that poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride consists predominantly, if not exclusively, of five-membered rings, linked mainly in a 3,4 cis configuration.
