Intravenous anaesthesia of horse using an infusion of xylazine, ketamine and glyceryl guaiacolate (guaiphenesin)

Effect of a new intravenous anaesthetic method, never used in Hungary before, were studied (physically and instrumentally) in 38 horses (20 adult and 18 foals) during a period of nearly three years. Signs observed during the physical examination and most useful to judge the deepness of anaesthesia have been summarized in a Table. The method was first reported by GREENE et al. in Welsh ponies. The aim was to find such an anaesthetic method that minimize the risks of general anaesthesia. The modified version of that method has been in the centre of actual research and thus, damaging effects of general anaesthesia in horse, as a shock inducing factor, could mostly be diminished (7, 8, 9, 10, 11). The authors' experiences are favourable. Figs 1 and 2 show the pulse and respiratory rates, as well as total capnogram of a horse and a foal in case of periodic application of infusion. The advantage of the method is that its application is easy, anaesthetic complications (myopathia, Zenker's skeletal muscle degeneration) do not develop and the deepness of general anaesthesia can easily be regulated. It can practically be applied in all types of horses independently of the breed, age, sex and use. It can be used for any type of operation. As compared to the inhalation anaesthesia, it needs less instruments, it is cheaper and the sleeping period can be two to three hours. The wake-up period is 20 to 30 Min. Doses of components in the infusion solution: 75 mg/ml of guaiphenesin, 0.5 mg/ml of xilazine and 2 mg/ml of ketamine (1 mg/ml of ketamine in case of foals yunger than 4 weeks of age). Concentration of ketamine in the blood plasma and tissues - after five injections - has been demonstrated according to the curve of MCCARTHY et al. (3, Fig. 3). The method of application: continuous or periodic drop infusion. The experiences are favourable. Conduction of general anaesthesia is simple, the method is practical and easy to carry out. It can improve the anaesthetic methodology not only in animal clinics but also that of practitioners.
