A method of preparing a novel non-ionic surfactant usefully employed in a cosmetic composition having the formula R-CHOH-CH2-O- CH2-CHOH-CH2-O-n-H wherein R is selected from the group consisting of aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and arylaliphatic radicals and mixtures thereof having 7-21 carbon atoms, n is greater than 1 and equal to or less than 10, the method comprising condensing on an alpha -diol having the formula R-CHOH-CH2OHwherein R has the above meaning, n moles of glycidol having the formula CH2-CH-CH2OH ANGLE O in the presence of an alkaline catalyst at a temperature of 120 DEG -180 DEG C.
